God and the State

by Mikhail Bakunin

God and the State is the best known work of the founder of collectivist anarchism, Mikhail Bakunin (1814-1876). His ringing denunciation of religion and authoritarian tyranny in all its forms is a basic text of anarchism and has been translated into at least ten languages.

The essay God and the State was found among Bakunin’s manuscripts after his death in 1876. This Black Cat Press edition uses the Mother Earth Publishing Association version of 1916, regarded as the most reliable English translation (from the French original).

God and the State is not an easy text but repays careful study. Bakunin had a gift for explaining complex ideas and his writings are full of masterful insights.
